Power Dressing: Decoded
Last Updated on July 1, 2024 by Team Styl.
Issac Bashevis Singer once quoted, “What a Strange Power There Is in Clothing!!!” so true. The debate always remains whether the man made the clothes or the clothes make a man? I think the two always stand for each other. Clothes, if worn with appropriate details, reflect a person’s image in public. I am a firm believer in the same.
What is Power Dressing?
As the word goes – “attire that shows power in our personalities.” The traditional definition says power dressing refers to our sense of dressing to demonstrate our authority at the workplace. The definition remains pretty much the same. The difference being, that in the present world, we are all set to experiment with our ensembles even at the workplace. We are also open to the idea of making bits of changes and dress as per our professions and the formal events we attend.
Key Elements
As established above, the basic concept of making a statement “I am In-charge” through your dressing remains the same. Here are a few basic elements to be taken care of when going for the concept:
1. Tailored Fit
The fit matters a lot when it comes to selecting your formal wear. There is a very less number of brands that serve you with best-fitted clothes. This is because every single body type is totally different from others. Therefore, one fit for everyone is just a myth. This is the reason we need to either find ourselves the ideal tailor or the right stylist.
What exactly do I mean by tailored fit here? The clothes reflect our personality. Therefore, they need to fit aptly. They should not be too loose or too tight, too long or too short.
2. Quality Of The Garment
The quality of the garment speaks a lot about us being authoritative. The quality includes the fabric, the cut and silhouette of the garment, its construction, and small little details about its hemlines, threads used, seems, etc.
3. Apt Colours
Every color has its own significance and each of them conveys some of the other quality about us. It is for this reason that traditionally, people prefer dark colors like Navy, Black, or Greys for their formal wear. These colors convey authority in their own way. Navy speaks of our trustworthiness and integrity, black talks about our sophistication, power, and authority and Charcoal Grey communicates our strong character and of how refined we are. But we surely can experiment with other shades like Burgundy or violets.
4. High-End Accessories
Accessories may differ from men to women when it comes to power dressing, but they do have a vital role to play. Men can carry on high-end wrist watches, swanky cufflinks, branded ties, and shoes or an impeccable pair of socks. Women often define their power via genuine leather handbags, sophisticated watches, or elegant jewelry pieces.
5. Visual Harmony
The above are the basic elements of a powerful attire but it all depends upon how we put everything together and make it work. We first need to choose the right pieces and then make them subtly sync in with each other to make a statement about our position. A blunder can land us nowhere near what we need to convey.
Power Dressing is easier said than done. It is an amalgamation of both art and sciences. We can read and learn its rules all by heart, but trust me it needs a lot more practice. But we don’t have to do it all by ourselves. A great stylist like Styl-Inc is always there to help us lay the foundation for better dressing. And as we at Styl-Inc say “changing one wardrobe at a time.”
