Have you ever received an invitation to an event that required semiformal attire? Are you entirely unsure of what a semi-formal dress code entails? If the answer is yes to both these questions, you are not alone. Semiformal dresses for men and women are a much-loved dress code for various events. Semi-formal attire is often worn to weddings, holiday parties, fine-dining restaurants and certain wedding-related events. Many high school dances and school events also have a semiformal dress code.

If you get an invitation that says that semiformal attire is required or preferred, then you have a wide range of choices. Especially if you are a woman. The dress code sits somewhere between casual and formal. So, you can ask the host for clarification just so you know exactly what they mean by semi-formal. Remember, whenever you have doubts, it is better to ask the organizer for information than to disrespect them.

Now, it is completely okay if you are a novice to the world of dress codes entirely. Or if you know only what formal wear and casual wear mean. Semiformal as a dress code can be vague and confusing without proper knowledge. We are here with a guide for you that decodes the semi-formal dress code.

Semi-Formal Dress Code

What is a Semi Formal Dress Code?

The semiformal attire is a category of dress codes that are required at semi formal events. The semiformal occasions include holiday parties, weddings, and some fine dining establishments. Semi-formal attire is quite similar to business casual attire. They both have elements of casual and formal dress codes. Semi-formal attire is also slightly less formal than cocktail attire. General outfit options for semi-formal dress code include button-down shirts, dress pants and dress shoes for men. For women, the options include jumpsuits, tea dresses and knee-length dresses with heels. The colour palette for a semi-formal event is dictated by the time of the day. This means that you wear light colours for the day and darker ones for the night.

Semi-formal Attire for Women

Like most fashion dress codes, semiformal attire has a lot of options for women. The broad category includes midi dresses, maxi dresses, wrap dresses, cocktail dresses, pantsuits and jumpsuits. A dress is generally the most accessible semi-formal garment. One of the things to keep in mind, however, is that the hemline of the dress can fall below the knee. If you must wear a shorter dress, ensure that it is not ending more than an inch above the knee.

Avoid wearing floor-length gowns as well as ball gowns that are more appropriate for black tie events. In terms of footwear, almost all shoes are good for the semi-formal dress code. You can opt for heels, sandals, flats and dress shoes. For your attire but especially the footwear, keep the location in mind. Heels on a beach can be quite uncomfortable.

For jewellery and other accessories, you essentially wear what you like. But we suggest taking a more minimalist route. Small bags with just enough space for your lipstick and phone are ideal. Complete the look with a fresh manicure and a sleek hairstyle.

Dressy fabrics like silk, cashmere and satin are perfect for a semi-formal dress code. In terms of other details, sparkling gemstones, pearls, and dressy fashion jewellery are great options. Remember that the more obvious details a garment or accessory has, the more casual it is.

Styl Tip: When in doubt remember that being overdressed is better than being underdressed.

Semi-formal Dress Code for Men

Men have fewer options in the semi-formal dress code than women. But that does not mean that they have less opportunity to look sharp and dapper. This is not the opportunity to pull out your tux and cummerbund. Rather, semi-formal attire calls for a more relaxed fit. A classic semiformal ensemble for men includes dress shoes, dress pants and a button-down dress shirt. The shoes can be loafers or oxfords. They are accompanied by dark socks without any quirky prints. A dark suit is a great option for semi-formal events. While wearing a suit, a tie or bowtie is optional and so is the pocket square. You can opt for a sports coat or blazer for daytime events and a suit jacket for evening occasions. Avoid wearing cufflinks. Rather opt for minimal accessories like a watch. Casual garments like polo shirts, t-shirts, khakis and tennis shoes are a strict no-no.

While wearing a solid suit set, you can experiment with textured and printed shirts. But for sports coats, we suggest keeping the shirt plain to avoid any fashion blunders. For footwear, you can also wear monk straps and derby shoes to add more elegance to your look. Add a belt that matches your dark shoes and socks. Finally, make sure that you are completely groomed and trimmed to avoid looking sloppy.

Dressy Casual Attire at Weddings

Weddings are the most prominent occasions where semi-formal attire is required or preferred. In a wedding invitation, semi-formal is also sometimes referred to as dressy casual. We know. The terminology is confusing. However, this dress code is extremely popular for daytime and evening weddings. In the Indian wedding setup, this dress code translates as sarees and lehengas for women and sherwanis and Jodhpouri suits for men. While the styling for suits is like what we mentioned above, sherwanis have their own code. They cannot be glitzier than what the groom is wearing or be in a similar colour palette. Silks are preferred but you can also pull off a cotton kurta pyjama set with a brocade Nehru jacket.

The attire for women is to also be glamorous but understated. This means that if you have something that will outshine the bride, do not wear it. Reds and pinks are a no unless specifically requested. Opt for more flowy fabrics and cuts along with less heavy embroideries. Again, keep the location and time in mind while selecting a colour palette. Finally, make sure that you do not look like a bridesmaid or groomsman in whatever colour you are wearing.  For this, just ask ahead of time what the colour palette of the wedding party is.
