Styl Trend Focus: How to Wear Crochet

Share this:

Along with sandals, sun dresses and denim cut-offs, crochet is one of the major signs that summer is here to bathe us in its glory. Everywhere you look right now for beach vacation outfits, you will see an influx of crochet. Be it in tops, skirts, bags or dresses, it is an unavoidable trend. Naturally, we were seeing various designers including JW Anderson and Chloé drop a range of crochet bags first in January. They are after all the easiest to style. But of course, as spring has passed and summer has trickled in, crochet clothes have come into the mix. The majority of these clothes have clearly included tops.

The crochet trend has a lot of grandmother’s home décor vibes attached to it. But as we have seen a resurgence of trends from the 60s and 70s, crochet being a trend makes sense. Of course, part of the revival of this trend can be traced to the thrift store shopping and vintage shopping that the Gen-Z population is engaging in. When everything the youth wears has ties to the past, granny chic fits as seamlessly as cottage core. The question that remains, however, is can you style crochet? Fret not dear readers. We are here to guide you through the many dilemmas you might have when it comes to crochet apparel.

How To Style Crochet

A highlighted feature of the bohemian and hippie sub-cultures, crochet has long been associated with being a free spirit. So quite obviously, crochet makes a comeback during festival season or when anyone is hitting the beach. Fashion people have already given this fabric their stamp of approval, wearing it with everything from flared jeans to floral dresses. Pinterest has confirmed that crochet is one of the biggest trends of 2022. Additionally, it settles in rather easily in the resurrection of Y2K as well. So, how do you even wear crochet?

Top With Tailored Pants

A crochet top with tailored pants seems like an unlikely combination but the juxtaposition works. The free-spiritedness of a crochet top with the structure of well-fitted pants balances the granny aesthetic and makes it more for the modern girl. We suggest going for a fitted crop top with the pants to have a balanced look. Similarly, sticking to a colour scheme is always a good idea. While imbibing the bohemian spirit is always good, colour cohesion will make you look more put together. After all, looking effortless means putting some thought into your outfits. Keep the fabric of your pants matte so that it does not compete with the texture of the crochet top and you should be good to go.

Styl Tip: If you are just starting to experiment with crochet, opt for fabrics with a tighter knit to make yourself feel more comfortable.

A Co-Ord Set

If you are feeling rather daring, we suggest wearing a full crochet co-ord set. This is perfect if you are going to the music festival or on a shoreside vacation. For one thing, a chic co-ord set is the best fuss-free outfit for any day. You can instantly step up your style game by wearing this outfit. Additionally, a co-od set automatically ensures that you have three outfits ready to go. You can always wear the top and the bottoms separately, reducing the number of things to pack. We suggest wearing a chic pair of espadrilles with a crochet co-ord set to fully drown in the resort wear aesthetic. When wearing this outfit to a music festival, opt for a pair of leather boots. Accessorize to your wit’s end and don’t forget to put on sunscreen.

Styl Tip: A helpful way to approach this trend is to start with things like hats and bags. Additionally, you can also incorporate crochet as a shrug or cover-up to see if you like the textile.

With Jeans

A loyal tip for whenever you are confused is just to wear jeans. A pair of foolproof denim pants is always to your rescue for any outfit dilemmas. The same pair of trusty pants is always there for you whenever you are confused about how to wear crochet. We suggest starting from the basics. Wear the crochet top with your favourite pair of jeans and let the magic unfold. The effortlessly chic casualness of a pair of jeans with the latest trend of the season never gets old. For the model off-duty look, finish the outfit with some chunky sneakers, sunglasses and a tiny shoulder bag. However, if you want to take inspiration from Carrie Bradshaw’s always fashionable looks, just wear a pair of heels instead of sneakers. Whatever you choose, this is one outfit where you simply cannot falter.

Styl Tip: For a chic look we suggest going for nude undergarments underneath the crochet for a seamless look.

Layer The Crochet Vest

This one is for the people who are entirely unsure about their thoughts on the crochet trend. If you wish to experiment a little without investing too much, we suggest buying a crochet vest. The silhouette easily lends itself to various ways of styling. It can be worn on its own or it can be layered. So, ease yourself into the trend by layering a crochet vest on top of a dress. Our personal favourite is the crochet and floral print combination. Just remember to pair prints that do not clash with each other. The easiest way to do this is to have a ditsy print floral dress and a crochet vest with a larger pattern.

Similarly, you can layer the vest on top of a classic white shirt for a more understated outfit. Layering with a white shirt opens up various avenues in terms of colour and pattern so we suggest you give it try.
