As the title of Game of Thrones said “Winter is Coming”. Or in our case, winter is here! Despite the cold’s slow tread, we are finally in the thick of it. Winer accompanies with itself delicious food, cosy days and best of all, hot chocolate and even hotter coffee! Roasted marshmallows anyone? But with all the amazing things we get in winter, it also has its bad sides. When the temperatures drop the humidity in the air drops drastically. This leads to a dry environment and even dryer skin! This is even more true for the exposed parts of your face, neck and hands. The air dries out whatever it can and your skin falls victim to it. But fret not dear readers. We are your experts for all things fashion and beauty. So of course we have a list of winter skincare essentials for you!

These skincare must-haves are what will save your skin in the dropping temperatures and pollution of the city. Now, we have made sure we exclude mentioning specific products. Why? Because we care about you. All of you have different skin types and therefore need specific products to cater to you. But! Before you turn around and ditch us, we do have a list of things you need to be on the lookout for in each product you buy. This list of winter skincare essentials includes a comprehensive routine, incredible tips and unmissable ingredients for your skin. All of this is in the simplest way possible for you to understand and apply. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get to it!

Winter Skincare Essentials To Save Your Skin

Cleanser

No skincare routine is complete without a cleanser in the mix. It is an abomination if you think you can get away with having unclean skin. During the winter months, due to the dry air, having hydrating products is a must. It does not matter if your skin type is oily, dry or a combination. Hydrating is key. So, opt for cleansers that include hydrating ingredients in them like coconut milk and lavender oil. If you have oily skin, invest in a water-based foaming cleanser. For the dry-skinned people out there, oils are your best friend. If you put on makeup on a regular basis, first take it off with an oil-based cleansing balm. Follow it up with a foaming face wash to remove any residue.

Styl Tip: Avoid using water that is hot or too cold. They will not only dry out your skin but can inflame it more. Opt for slightly cool water or water that matches the temperature of your skin.

Winter Skincare Essentials For Exfoliation

Use gentle exfoliants on your skin during the winter season. Do not use harsh chemical peels or acids as they have a tendency to be drying. Also, do not over-exfoliate. Doing it once a week is more than enough to keep your skin glowing but also hydrated. Look for exfoliants that have honey, yoghurt and other nourishing ingredients.

Toner

Your toner should always target your primary skin issue. It is the first product you put on clean skin. So, make sure that it is the most effective one. For extra dry skin, choose a toner with hydrating properties. If your primary issue is pigmentation or dull skin, your toner should have ingredients to target those problems. Whatever the primary concern, your toner should regardless have hydrating elements like hyaluronic acid in it.

Styl Tip: Always apply your skin care products on slightly damp skin. This will help lock in extra moisture and reduce texture.

Winter Skincare Essentials: Serum

Serums are an extra step in your moisturization routine that we recommend, particularly during the winter. Serums, like toner, address a concern that you might have regarding your skin. But they can often be a little tricky to understand. A vitamin C serum is a must in our list of winter skincare essentials. It not only helps with cell regeneration but also boosts collagen and helps fight the damage done to your skin during summer. We suggest using this during the day. For the night, if you want, you can use a hydrating serum that also targets pigmentation or dark spots. One with hyaluronic acid, alpha arbutin and niacinamide works best. This is the step where you introduce actives to your skin. To understand more on how to use them, read our blog on safe usage of skincare actives.

Moisturizer

Moisturizer is the most important part of any skincare routine. Use a skin suitable moisturizer for your skin type. If you have dry skin, opt for oil-based ones. However, for oily skin, water-based moisturizers are best. Make sure you have a day cream and a night cream. Day creams subtly hydrate your skin and protect it from pollution. But night creams have extra hydration elements in them that work to heal the damage your skin goes through during the day. Your day cream should have a matte look to avoid oiliness throughout the day. However, your night cream should make you look like a freshly glazed doughnut. That’s the rule! Double up on areas of your skin that get a little extra dry.

Styl Tip: Instead of using a separate eye cream, you can use some extra night cream under your eyes for extra protection and hydration.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a year-round must-have. But it is of utmost importance in your winter skincare essentials kit. As we keep reiterating, opt for a hydrating formulation that does not have a white cast. Remember that the higher the SPF, the better it is, but an SPF value of 50 is a must. Additionally, also ensure that your sunscreen has both UVA and UVB protection. Remember, just because you can’t see it, does not mean the sun can’t damage your skin.

Styl Tip: Do not forget about your hands! Make sure that you always have a hand cream with you to keep your palms moisturized well. One with SPF in it can do wonders for the skin of your hands.

Vaseline

An extremely underrated product in our world right now is petroleum jelly. This simple ingredient does wonder for healing dry and cracked skin. You can use vaseline for your lips, sure. But you can also use it on your hands and feet at night. Additionally, you can use it in place of an eye cream. People also do slugging, which is like using vaseline as your night cream. If you have extra dry patches on your skin, vaseline does wonders for it. Additionally, you can use it as a makeup remover as it melts the products like magic. So, this is an important one on our list of skincare essentials.
