Summer Skincare Routine: A Guide To Glowing Skin
Last Updated on March 27, 2023 by Sagarika Kapoor
We are just at the advent of summer here in India. The temperatures are getting higher and the sun feels a little extra daunting. Along with this, you are most likely witnessing a change in how your skin is behaving. The winter skincare routine that had down pat is now seemingly betraying you. Everything is too heavy, your skin is not dewy but oily and dull. You might also experience an overall stickiness on your face and body. This is a sign that your skinโs requirements are altering. Now, we know that you know that. Thatโs why you are here reading this, my friend! So, fret not for I have a simple summer skincare routine for you. Here, I have included not just what you need to include but also how you can incorporate it according to your skin type.
Is It True That Your Skin Changes With The Seasons?
Do you sometimes wake up one day and see that your skin looks drastically different than it did yesterday? What about when you go on vacations to places that have different weather than where you live? If so, you are probably wondering what the cause is. Well, it is something that we do not often see people talking about in the realm of skincare. The environment! As it is with everything in our lives, our skin also changes with the weather and season. During winter the cold, dry air is harsh on your delicate skin. That is why you often experience extra dehydrated skin overall. Even the temperature of the water you shower with and the textiles you wear influence this. Conversely, the sticky, humid weather in the summer makes your skin oily. Additionally, the sweat clogs your pores leading to more acne breakouts and maybe even bacterial infections.ย
So, due to the differences in how our surroundings affect our skin, the requirements of your skincare routine change. Whilst your summer skincare routine is focused more on protection, the winter routine is geared towards hydration. This means that some of the products you use get changed and the actives you include in your skincare routine alter. Most importantly, however, the way you use your products is different. So, with this foundation in mind, let us see what your basic summer skincare routine should include.ย
A Summer Skincare Routine To Protect And Nourish Your Skin
When building any skincare routine, you need to remember the building blocks of CMP. This translates to cleanse, moisturize and protect. This is what your entire summer skincare routine can be broken down to. So, products related to this are a must. Add to this whatever concern you have regarding your skin. This can be dark spots, hyperpigmentation, dehydration, wrinkles, acne and dullness. Add the necessary actives and products to tackle this concern and you will have your skincare routine. If you want an extra something, preventative products can also be included. Now that we know this, let us see what your beginnerโs summer skincare routine looks like.ย
Cleansing Is The Most Essential Part Of Your Summer Skincare Routine
No matter what the season, cleansing is a step you can never let go of. This step is the basis of your entire skincare process. It unclogs your pores and gives a clean foundation for all the products you will layer on top. So, make sure you cleanse properly with the correct products. As a general rule, gentle cleansers are great for any skin type. However, certain concerns may require you to use cleansers that double up. If you have oily skin, use a gentle oily skin cleanser from brands like Cetaphil and Simple. They will clean your face without stripping it of essential oils. Dry skin requires cleansers that do not foam at all and ones that hydrate your skin. If you have sensitive skin, gentle cleansers go all the way. Nothing else, no actives, no extra pizzazz. The simpler the better. For acne-prone skin, you can include a cleanser with salicylic acid in it to help.ย
Styl Tip: In your summer skincare routine, clean twice only if you really require it. Otherwise, use a face wash at night and plain water in the morning.ย
Moisturize You Skin To Get The Glow
Often we have quite oily skin in summer so we think moisturizing is unnecessary. That could not be further from the truth! Guys, gals and everyone in between, moisturization is the most important thing to protect your skin from infections. It maintains your skin barrier and helps heal scars quicker. So, do not skip! Now the way you moisturize differs. For everyone, using water-based moisturizers that have ceramides is great! Water-based moisturizers will hydrate your skin without clogging it. Next comes consistency. Oily-skinned people need gel moisturizers and dry-skinned people require creams. If you have combination skin, however, get lotions for the best of both worlds.ย
Styl Tip: Avoid using heavy makeup in the summer as it will clog your pores more and make you feel sticky.
Protect With SPF!
Do you know how people say less is more? Theyโre lying. More is always more, at least when it comes to sunscreen. For your summer skincare routine, sunscreen is unmissable. You have to use it and use it right! Two fingers’ worth of sunscreen for your face, neck ad ears are applied every three hours. For the body, use moisturizers with heavy-duty SPF in them. When looking for sunscreen, make sure that the one you buy is a broad spectrum, water resistant and with no white cast. An SPF of 30 is the minimum requirement but an SPF of 50 is even better. Do not forget about sunscreen on your feet, hands and neck.ย
Styl Tip: Double cleanse at night to remove the SP on your face adequately.
Actives To Be Included In Your Summer Skincare Routine
Actives are an essential push to boost up the effects of the basics of your skincare. They help enhance the effects of some things whilst tackling skin concerns. Some of theย essential activesย include Vitamin C to help protect your skin from sun damage. You can also include niacinamide to help with acne, dark spots and skin texture. Additionally, hyaluronic acid is great for extra hydration in humid climates. If you have acne, add salicylic acid and glycolic acid. For a preventative measure, you can also include retinoids once or twice a week at night for better skin. However, make sure that you follow up with sunscreen no matter what for better results. Mask Up
Another essential for any skincare routine in summer is different masks for your face. You can use them to hydrate, balance oily skin and even exfoliate. Skin peels are also included in this along with chemical exfoliation methods. AHAs and BHAs are perfect for chemical exfoliation. But you can also use different DIY face masks. For a completeย guide to summer face masks, you can check outย our blogs on it. However, you must ensure that you use these masks once a week or once in ten days to maintain your skin barrier.
