Bollywood has always been a source of style inspiration for the masses. Many trends that we wore over the years were a result of seeing our favourite celebs wearing them. With the advent of social media and the wide reach of journalism, we now get more access to what everyone is wearing. We keep seeing new brands on our favourite actors and actresses. They also serve as a source of inspiration for new styling ideas. In India, weddings are larger than life. And if it is a celebrity wedding, well prepare to have your minds blown. Over recent years, various celebrity weddings have taken the world by storm. The Bollywood brides have shown Indian girls how to modernise their wedding outfits while maintaining the air of tradition. No doubt that they have been quite the trendsetters for weddings.

From outfits to makeup, jewellery and even the rituals, the brides of Bollywood have influenced it all. For those of you looking for some celebrity inspiration, we have a list of the trendsetting Bollywood brides of the 21st century. These brides not only challenged customs but also served as motivation for other brides to experiment.

Bollywood Brides Who Started Wedding Trends

Anushka Sharma

Trendsetter For a Step Away From Red

Whenever we think about celebrity brides, the first name that comes to mind is Anushka Sharma. The Anushka-Virat wedding saw many new things for the wedding industry in India. Be it a natural blush pink makeup, or a floral pink lehenga, Anushka set the wedding world on fire. The fresh take on her wedding outfits gave other brides the confidence to maintain their minimalist style. Even on their wedding day. Additionally, steering the wheel, Anushka single-handedly changed the course of coloured lehengas by bringing pastels to the forefront. Even today, while looking for wedding inspiration, one of the Bollywood brides people look to is Anushka Sharma.

Alia Bhatt

Trendsetter For Minimalism At Its Finest

The recent Alia and Ranbir wedding had fans in quite a tizzy. Everyone had questions about what Alia would wear and what she would like. The results were quite unexpected. While experts were predicting whose lehenga the bride would wear, no one questioned what she might wear. The twist was that Alia did not wear a lehenga at all rather she went for a saree. Additionally, the saree was not the typical bridal wrap that you get. It was the perfect minimalist edition of a wedding saree. White with golden embroidery on top, natural-looking makeup, open hair and a minimal Mehendi. Alia and Ranbir’s wedding look broke quite a few rules and set quite a few trends. We are sure we will see more and more brides in the coming months who opt for minimalism for their weddings inspired by Alia.

Bollywood Brides: Yami Gautam

Trendsetter For Going Back To Your Roots

When we think of Bollywood brides and their wedding outfits, a designer likely is what comes to mind. Be it Sabyasachi or Manish Malhotra, we expect a celebrity bride to wear something that makes everyone drool over their outfit. So it came as a pleasant surprise when it was announced that Yami Gautam wore her mother’s bridal outfit. The actress wore her mother’s red saree with a floral blouse. To that, she added a red dupatta gifted by her maternal grandmother. No designers anywhere and she still looked like the most beautiful bride.

Priyanka Chopra

Trendsetter For Desi Girl Grandeur

Priyanka Chopra’s wedding was a rather intimate but dramatic affair. We believe that she is one of the biggest trendsetting Bollywood brides out there. The length of Priyanka’s veil and dupatta from both her outfits still dazzles the audience. Of course, the statement effect has pushed many brides to have dupattas be larger than life. Additionally, the red on red ensemble had many copies around the gullies of Chandni Chowk looking for their wearer. Maybe you are one of them?

Deepika Padukone

Trendsetter For Two Cultural Weddings

The Deepika and Ranveer wedding was the talk of the town when it happened. Two of the biggest stars of Bollywood were getting married after years of speculation. People were expecting unmatched grandeur and did they get it. Deepika’s bridal look has passed the test of time as it is still one of the most copied outfits. Brides everywhere look towards her makeup, hair and wedding ensemble for inspiration. Deepika’s custom red dupatta gained so much popularity that Sabyasachi has now made it a part of his bridal collections. The kohled eyes with natural base makeup is a look brides are copying even today. One of the biggest trends from this wedding, however, was the occurrence of two types of weddings, one for each culture. Couples from different cultures are now taking inspiration from Deepika and Ranveer’s wedding and doing two weddings. Now, this is what we call a trendsetting Bollywood bride.

Bollywood Brides: Dia Mirza

Trendsetter For Objecting to Patriarchal Norms

Ever think about the patriarchal norms that follow a girl into marriage? Or the rituals like kanyadaan that treat women as an object to give away? Like us, we are sure that you have not only pondered these things but also wondered if there is anything you could do to stop them. Well, Dia Mirza, at her wedding, took the opportunity to not only question but also change these practices. She hired a female priestess to do all the rituals for the wedding. Additionally, she let go of misogyny rooted practices like kanyadaan. Daring to go beyond just objection, she acted for a better future for women, inspiring many others to do the same at their weddings.

Katrina Kaif

Trendsetter For Her Phoolon Ki Chadar

Vicky and Katrina’s wedding was one of the biggest events of the year. Even though we do not know a lot of details about the Bollywood wedding, what we do know makes us feel amazed. Katrina has always been known to be a rule breaker. So, of course, she did that at her wedding too. The phoolon ki chadar, traditionally carried by brothers, was held by Katrina’s sisters. Who says only brothers can be protectors? Kat proved everyone wrong with her actions.

Kareena Kapoor Khan

Trendsetter For Resetting History

When marrying into royalty one must adopt multiple traditions, especially for their wedding. For her wedding to Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor wore a silk sharara set. This set, as a lehenga, was worn by Sharmila Tagore for her wedding to the nawab. It belonged to Sharmila Tagore’s mother in law, the Begum of Bhopal. Kareena chose to imbibe tradition and heritage by wearing the same set. But she chose to update it with the help of ace designer Ritu Kumar. The Bhopali Joda was restored and embellished into a sharara set to fit the 21st century. Kareena’s move to wear an heirloom sharara for her wedding inspired many brides to go for their heritage wedding wear. Many women refurbished their mother’s and grandmother’s outfits for their wedding day, adding more blessings to the big day.
