The Hariyali Teej is a significant festival and is celebrated to mark the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It will be observed on 31st July this year. Both married women and unmarried women can keep this fast. Married women can fast for their husband’s long life and health. The festival of Hariyali Teej carries utmost importance, especially for newlyweds. First Teej after marriage can be extremely exciting as you will get a chance to dress up like a bride again. However, there are various rituals and things to keep in mind for the first Teej after marriage. Here, we will share some things you must keep in mind if you are fasting for the first time after marriage.

Newlyweds are so much crazy and excited for their first Teej. It is an important day when wives get a chance to express their love for their partners. On this day, women usually apply henna or mehndi on their hands and decorate their houses with lights and flowers. On the first Teej after marriage, women receive gifts from their parents, parents-in-law, husbands, and loved ones. In-laws usually gift the newly-wed ‘Shrinjhara’ or ‘Sindhare’ which is the most significant part of Teej rituals. The word ‘shrinjhara’ means “adornment”. This comprises of traditional laheria dress, bangles, henna, sindhur or vermillion, and special sweets. Parents of the bride and other relatives usually give the couple clothes, jewellery, dry fruits, and other gifts.

First Teej After Marriage: Do’s for New Brides

Here are some fasting rules you must keep in mind: 

  • Wake up early: The most important thing to keep in mind is to wake up on time. Whether you are a married woman or an unmarried woman, you will have to start your day by performing the puja and offering water to the deities. This is why it is important to wake up early and get ready on time. 
  • Check the muhurat time of the puja to determine when you should perform arti of both the deities. 
  • In this puja, you should offer homemade sweets and other delicacies to deities. You can consider offering dishes such as halwa, poori, kheer, gujiya, coconut laddoo, fresh fruits or readymade sweets like ghewar, and khaja.
  • Most married women are keeping a phalahari vrat these days, which allows them to have fruits during the day.
  • Before the day of fasting, you must drink about 4-5 litres of water to stay hydrated as you will not be allowed to consume water on the day of fasting. 
  • You should chant Shiva mantras and listen to Shiv Parvati bhajans on the day of fasting.
  • You may require these for your puja rituals: cow milk, bel batra, dhature ke phool, and leaves. 
  • On this day, women wear green bangles as it is considered a symbol of longevity, health, and happiness of the husband. 
  • You should also listen to the fast story of Hariyali Teej on the day of the first Teej after marriage. 
  • Light a Diya for the whole day and keep adding oil to it.

First Teej After Marriage: Don’ts for New Brides

Here are some things you must strictly avoid on the first Teej: 

  • Avoid wearing anything black and white. 
  • Do not lie to your spouse or husband. The fast is marked for the healthy and long life of the husband. Make sure you do not deceive or say any kind of lies to your husband. 
  • Make sure you do not overeat the day before. Try to have a balanced diet of food items that contain carbohydrates and proteins. Avoid consuming sweets and dehydrating food items such as salt, white sugar, and coffee. 
  • Do not sleep at the night. 
  • You should be kind to everyone and avoid arguing with any of the family members on the day of Teej. You must consider worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati at the night and must listen to the Bhajans.
  • If you are pregnant or sick, you may consider drinking water. Other women should strictly avoid drinking water on the day of Teej. 
  • Do not think bad about anyone or use bad language while communicating with anyone on the day of the fast. 
  • Make sure you do not harm the environment in any way on the day of your fast.

There are various important traditions of this day. Every state has its own rituals, and in some states, women bathe with red mud to purify themselves.
