Historically, jewel tones have been associated with luxury and royalty. Even today, dark purples and ruby reds are associated with richness and lavishness. Their opulent nature still creates a magnificent look for anyone who decides to don them on. This is why clothing made of jewel tones automatically adds a richer aura to the wearer. Additionally, they can be worn together or with neutrals to suit all styles. This makes them the ideal addition to every wardrobe.

Different Types of Jewel Tones

We know that the jewel tone colour palette emerged from the stark colour of gemstones. But have you ever wondered what the different tones are? Everyone knows the popular emerald, sapphire and ruby. However, the world of jewel tones goes beyond that. Below we have a list of the different jewel tones and their common associations.

1. Sapphire Blue

Inspired by the sapphire stone, this blue is associated with serenity and loyalty. It is often a top choice for people to colour block with complementary colours like emerald and citrine. It is quite close to the primary blue taking over the spring-summer 2022 runways.

2. Jewel Tones: Emerald Green

The alluringly earthy and mysterious colour is the most prevalent in nature. It is associated with creativity and productivity. Emerald green has a unique duality to it. It is a pick me up colour and has a calming quality because of its closeness to the colour of nature. It is often paired with beiges, creams and browns but also looks rich with complementary colours. Its sister, Kelly Green is quite popular for the spring/summer 2022 colour trend.

4. Jewel Tones: Amethyst Purple

Purple has always been associated with royalty, excellence and bravery. Maybe that is why it was picked as the colour for International Women’s Day. If we break it down, we see that purple is a combination of red and blue. The red stimulates the senses and blue calms us down. This dichotomy makes amethyst purple the perfect hue for multiple occasions.

Which Jewel-Tones Suit Which Skin Undertone?

Now to the question, you are here for. Which jewel tones flatter which skin tones? To know that, you first need to determine your skin tone. There are two primary ways to do it.

1. The Vein Test

Look at the colour of your veins on the underside of your wrist. If they are olive, you have a warm skin tone. Purple veins suggest that your skin tone is cool. If your veins are both olive and purple, your skin tone is neutral.

2. The White Paper Test

In natural sunlight, put a plain white paper against your face and on the inside of your arm, next to your chest. If you appear pinkish or reddish against the paper, you have a cool skin tone. A yellow tint against the paper suggests that your skin tone is warm. If some parts appear yellow and others appear pink, you have a neutral skin tone.

How to determine your skin tone and what colours suit you

Now you know what your skin tone is. The general rule of thumb is that cool colours will go with cool undertones. Additionally, warm colours will flatter warm skin undertones. However, for a neutral undertone, almost all colours will flatter that skin tone. For a jewel-toned colour palette, the same rule applies. Cool tones like sapphire blue and emerald green flatter cool-toned skin. Along with this, citrine yellow and ruby red flatter warm-toned skin. Amethyst purple however flatters every skin tone.

It is interesting to note, however, that because of the high saturation and dynamic nature of jewel tones, they tend to flatter all skin tones in general too. This means that you can wear whichever jewel colour palette you want. To be on the safer side, keep the colour away from your face lest it washes you out.

Tones fashion: How to Incorporate Jewel Tones Into Your Wardrobe?

We know that jewel tones can be quite difficult to add to your wardrobe. They are consistently statement worthy and sometimes tricky to pair with. However, if you are new to the whole jewel-toned colour palette game, we have a few suggestions on how you can incorporate them into your daily life.

1. Start with Accessories and Footwear

The easiest way to see if a colour works well with your wardrobe is to use it as an accessory. This includes bags, belts, earrings, etc. It will help you gauge the adaptability of your wardrobe while lowly including the hues into your life. The same idea applies to using it as footwear or even better, socks!

2. Jewel Toned Makeup

Makeup is generally the ideal way to slowly experiment with colour. Using jewel tones in makeup not only helps you understand what works with your skin and what does not, but it also helps you know which colours can be paired together. This is a fun and easy way to try jewel tones. And the best part is that you can remove it with a swipe if you do not like it!

3. Progress to Shirts

Before going all out with a head-to-toe jewel-toned look, try the colour out with a shirt or two. The garment will help you understand how comfortable you are wearing the colour. An additional benefit is that even though it is bold, it does not scream for attention the way a dress would.
