The first step when you start doing your manicure at home is to clean your nails and remove old nail polish. Keeping your nails clean is the most important step in not just a manicure, but in your general cleanliness routine as well. It is important to use a good quality polish remover as it not only removes your nail lacquer, but also nourishes your nails and helps you get rid of any residual dust. A good nail paint remover doesn’t leave your hands dry and provides enough nourishment. Even if you don’t have any polish on, you should still clean your nails with a remover to get rid of any dirt or residual particles that might ruin your new nail paint.

Soak Your Hands in Warm, Soapy Water

Once you’re done removing your nail paint, it’s time to get rid of all the dead skin and stubborn dirt. Get a big bowl, big enough to fit your hands, or you can take two bowls and fill them up with soap water. Use baby shampoo or any mild hand wash in warm water. Soak your hands in soapy water for 4 to 5 minutes. This will help soften your cuticles and get rid of any leftover dead skin or dirt. Use a manicure brush to lightly brush your hands once you’ve soaked them in water. Make sure to scrape under the nail and get rid of all the gunk.

Time to Clip, File and Buff

The most important part of any manicure is shaping your nails. Use a nail cutter to clip your nails and a buffer or nail file to shape them into your desired length and shape. Avoid cutting your nails too short as nail paint won’t stay properly on short nails. While buffing or filing, make sure to use short, gentle strokes and don’t go too hard on your nails. Once you’re done filing, you can use a buffer to smoothen out the top of your nails. This gives a super clean and polished look. Also, don’t forget to push back the cuticles. Your cuticles protect your nails from bacteria and keep them stronger so avoid cutting them.

Exfoliate for Soft, Baby Hands

We all know the power of exfoliation. It not only helps you get rid of dead, dull skin, but also gives your skin the much needed moisture. Use a mild exfoliator and gently scrub your hands, wrist and forearms. You can also use natural exfoliators like coffee, ground oatmeal, ground sea salt or brown sugar. Also, gently cleanse your nails to get rid of any grime or dirt. Once you’re done scrubbing your hands, wash off the exfoliator and pat dry to avoid irritation. Remember to always scrub your hands in circular motions as that will increase the blood circulation in your skin and will give you soft, glowing skin.

Moisturize Your Hands Thoroughly

Once you’re done scrubbing, the next step without any doubt has to be to moisturize. The last step of cleaning part of your manicure should be to use a good hand cream to nourish the skin. Use the cream to relax yourself with a nice massage. Gently massage your palms and fingers. This will make your manicure at home relaxing and enjoyable. Once you’re done, clean your nails with nail polish remover to get rid of residual cream and prepare your nails for nail paint. A good dose of exfoliation and moisturizing is sure to leave your hands healthy and soft for days.

Apply Base Coat and Nail Paint

Next up is a base coat and nail paint. Now that your hands are all clean and nourished, it’s time for some pretty nail paint to complete the look. Start with a base coat. This not only protects your nails from damage, but also makes your nail paint long lasting and perfect. Once your base coat is dry, start with the first coat of your nail paint. Apply carefully to avoid spreading it on your cuticles. After the nail paint dries, you can go for a second coat as well. To make your look stylish, you can even try a subtle and easy nail art.

End your Manicure With a top Coat

Once your nail paint dries completely, end your manicure with a top coat. Top coat acts as the last layer on your nail paint and protects it from chipping. But you must be careful during this step. While many might think that the top coat being transparent isn’t really visible, that’s not really true. If the top coat is not applied properly it can cause ridges which can ruin the neat look of your nail polish. And if your nail paint is not completely dry, the top coat can even mess up your entire nail paint. Wait patiently for the top coat to dry to complete your look.

Finally, Clean up the Untidy Edges

The last step in your manicure at home routine is to clean up the untidy edges. No matter how hard you try, nail paint can easily spread out of your nails and get on your cuticles. To make your manicure look neat and clean, dip a q-tip in nail paint remover and carefully clean the edges of your nails. If you’re using nail polish remover pads, you can fold it into a triangle for  precise cleaning. Make sure your nail paint looks even and absolutely neat and you’re all ready with your brand new manicure.
